CPI is a scheduled volatility event for both index futures - 08:30 ET - and the reaction is never to the headline. It is to what the print does to the expected path of rates.
Reacts to the same mechanism, more slowly. Headline cooling on energy while core services stay firm is the version that does not change policy - and the initial ES pop on the headline is what fades.
The bigger mover of the two. A hot core-services print pushes the expected path out, and NQ pays for that more than ES does.
Backwards here: energy is a CPI component, so crude usually leads the print rather than reacting to it.
