World Map

Most trading surfaces stop at ticker + time. The world map adds space. A Panamax tanker leaving Houston is not an abstraction when you can watch it sail. A hurricane in the Gulf is not a headline when you can see its projected track over refineries.

It opens as a real 3D globe — drag to rotate the Earth, wheel to zoom — with a stack of live geographic layers, a day/night terminator that creeps westward at 15° per hour, and hover tooltips that link everything on screen to the tickers that care about it. Click a ticker in any other panel and the map reverse-focuses on the country and assets tied to it.

Three routes into the map:

• The command palette (Ctrl+P) — type world map and press Enter.
• The keyboard — Ctrl+Alt+Shift+G.
• The menu bar — Add Panel → World Map, or just ask the ship out loud to open it.

It lands on the 3D globe. To pin it to a place, click a ticker in a linked panel — the map reverse-focuses on the country that ticker lives in and highlights the assets carrying its name (see Reverse-linking below).

Each layer toggles independently from the LAYERS column on the right edge of the panel. Pro-gated layers show a tier badge when a Free viewer hovers them. A core set is below — the panel carries more, and new layers ship regularly.

The panel opens on the orthographic 3D globe — the showpiece. Drag anywhere to rotate the Earth around its view-center; the wheel scales the globe. There is also a flat 2D map mode; every geographic layer routes through the same projection, so it renders correctly in either.

Detail is level-of-detail aware. At a low zoom the globe stays readable — continents, the busiest lanes, and density-style vessel and flight glow, with labels held back. As you zoom in, a finer coastline tier swaps in and labels, sprite icons, and per-asset gradings fade up, so a globe-to-city sweep reveals more the closer you get without ever cluttering the overview.

Every asset on the map has a hover tooltip. They're designed for speed-reading — the two-line summary tells you what it is, the tier-2 expansion links it to tickers.

Every tooltip has a "→ click" action. Clicking focuses the asset, pops a drawer with deeper detail, and — where applicable — retargets your focused chart to the ticker this asset most correlates with.

A thin line sweeps westward across the map at 15° per hour — the edge where sunlight just hit or just left. The night hemisphere carries a subtle dark tint. City lights on the night side glow amber.

The terminator updates every five seconds so it moves visibly. Its position is calculated from real sun geometry (declination + hour angle), not a static offset — so solstice and equinox read correctly.

Reference points painted on top of the layers:

• 33 airport labels — major international + cargo hubs.
• 20 port labels — the world's busiest container and crude ports.
• 9 chokepoint labels — the maritime pressure points every energy trade lives or dies by. Hormuz, Malacca, Bab el-Mandeb, Suez, Bosphorus, Panama, and more.

Labels fade in as zoom increases — at globe view only the largest are drawn; zoom to national level and every listed hub carries its name.

Click a ticker in any other panel — DOM, chart, news — and the map pans to the country that ticker is listed in and highlights any assets that carry its name. Put the map on the same link group as those panels (the colored swatch in each title bar) and the map follows every symbol change in the group.

This is the map's quietest feature and the one I use most. A ticker becomes a place: where the production happens, where the ships dock, which pipelines it depends on.

Flights stream via ADS-B transponder data. Vessels via AIS. Weather via the National Weather Service; tropical systems via the National Hurricane Center. Seismic activity via USGS. All are public-domain feeds with permissive redistribution — no licensing layer between you and the world.

Static layers (shipping lanes, airports, fabs, power plants, pipelines, refineries, LNG terminals, chokepoint annotations) are curated from public regulatory filings, company disclosures, and academic datasets.

The globe and every layer are GPU-rendered, so the map holds full frame rate with thousands of live assets on screen. When a layer gets too dense to read, it falls back to a density view — individual sprites become a colored density cell until you zoom in far enough for them to separate again.

Level-of-detail does the rest: the heavy tiers only draw once you've zoomed in far enough to need them, so the overview stays smooth no matter how much data is streaming.
